Tradition Never Graduates

For over 100 years now future pastors have been competing on the hardwood. United throughout the years, Lutheran pastors spanning the country have graced the court at Eldon Petersen Fieldhouse, and have served as ambassadors for Concordia Seminary to opposing teams and fans across the Midwest. This year was no exception. We faced a challenging schedule as we gathered on Oct. 9th for the first of many practices. We began the year by facing Concordia System Schools—Selma and Seward, as they made the trip to St. Louis. The season also included two games against McKendree College, a team coached by Harry Stratham, who has the most wins of any college basketball coach ever—937. Numerous opponents were ranked in the top 25 of their respective divisions.

Coached by third-year student Matt Jennings, the “Preachers” fought hard every night, and ended the season with a 7-19 record. The team finished the season playing its best basketball of the year, winning 6 of its last 9 games. The synods two seminary’s square off twice each season, with each seminary hosting its own tournament. We extended our 26-year winning streak by winning both games. We won a hard-fought game in Fort Wayne 77-67, and delighted the home crowed with an 80-50 victory. Finally, coaches, wives, many children, professors, students, and fans supported us and helped make this a memorable season!
